Below is an overview of some of the conferences and seminars that organised by the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavism Research Project. 

Caitanya Vaiṣṇavism in Bengal conference

was a one-day conference in honour of Professor Joseph O’Connell the late eminent scholar of Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavism and Senior Fellow at the OCHS, entitled ‘Caitanya Vaiṣṇavism in Bengal’. The successful conference brought together leading and rising scholars of Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavism in both pre-colonial and colonial periods.

Organised by programme leaders Dr Lucian Wong and Dr Rembert Lutjeharms in 2019.

Bengali Vaiṣṇavism
conference

brought scholars together from India, Finland, Sweden, and Oxford who presented and discussed their latest research on this burgeoning area of study, exploring modern Bengali Vaiṣṇavism in relation to a variety of themes including transnational mission, print culture, Anglo-Hindu law, and global occult.

Organised by Dr Lucian Wong in 2018.

The Building of Vṛndāvana conference

explored the complex history of Vṛndāvana’s early modern origins from the late fifteenth century until the reign of Aurangzeb, when several of the traditions of Vṛndāvana moved further west due to political instability and persecution.

A two-day conference hosted by the OCHS in Trinity College, Oxford, in 2017. 

Middle Bengali language retreat

was open to scholars and advanced students from all over the world and consisted of intensive group readings of Bengali texts from the medieval and early modern period led by experts in the field.

Hotsed by Dr Lucian Wong (OCHS), Professor Imre Banga (University of Oxford), and Professor Thibaut D’hubert (University of Chicago) in Romania in 2016, 

Bengali Vaiṣṇavism in the Modern Period conference

brought together over 30 international scholars across the disciplines to explore the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava tradition during the pivotal ‘modern’ phase of its development.

The Building of Vṛndāvana conference

In 2017, the OCHS hosted a two-day conference held in Trinity College, Oxford, titled ‘The Building of Vṛndāvana’ where scholars met to explore the complex history of Vṛndāvana’s early modern origins from the late fifteenth century until the reign of Aurangzeb, when several of the traditions of Vṛndāvana moved further west due to political instability and persecution.

In 2016, Dr Lucian Wong was co-organiser on a Middle Bengali language retreat in Romania in cooperation with Professor Imre Banga (University of Oxford) and Professor Thibaut D’hubert (University of Chicago). The retreat was open to scholars and advanced students from all over the world and consisted of intensive group readings of Bengali texts from the medieval and early modern period led by experts in the field.
