Tara Goswami is an Assamese artist whose art, which is deeply intertwined with her spiritual practice, has at its core the journey of Self revelation. The process of recognising and realising one’s identity that is beyond all physical, cultural, social, political definitions – moving towards a more non-dual understanding of our essential nature.
Tara draws from her practices of traditional yoga, meditation and Śākta tantra (initiated into the Kaula tantra mārga of the renowned Kāmākhyā Temple in Assam) and passes the teachings and practices of these ancient wisdom traditions through layers of personal experience, exploration and interpretation to produce contemporary abstract expressions.
She prefers to step down from the role of the artist as creator, to the humbler position of artist as medium and considers the act of art making a sādhana or spiritual practice in service of the divine. The process of creation, against the backdrop of spiritual contemplation becomes a form of absorption and meditation. Through the use of mantra, vibration, ritual and repetition works become portals between the sacred and the profane.
Tara currently lives between New Delhi and Assam, finding balance between art, teaching yoga and deepening her own spiritual experience. She has been teaching yoga independently since 2009 with over 2000 hrs of training. Among her most prominent shows was ‘International art paper’(2016) a group exhibition at the prestigious Galería Carles Taché in Barcelona exhibiting alongside artists like Cornelia Parker, Bosco Sodi, Sean Scully, and Javier Pèrez.
